Freedoom offers a free and open source game engine, including original game levels and assets. An alternative to Google Play is DeltaTouch.
Unfortunately, the latest update for this app is not available on the Google Play store due to some recent changes. The update was meant to include the latest version of Freedoom wad(s) and some corrections to the language.
Furthermore, the build tools for this app have been deprecated, and as a result, active development has been suspended. However, if you're interested in taking over this project, you can check out the GitHub and let the developer know.
Even though this app will remain free and functional for most users, Beloko's DeltaTouch can be an alternative option to consider.
The idea behind Freedoom stems from the fact that while the gaming engine of the beloved 1993 game and its several sequels are open source, most of their "assets" like textures, sounds, and game levels are copyrighted. In response, the Freedoom project was launched to create an open-source, original, and community-driven solution. Along with the game engine's open-source status, this app provides a completely cost-free and open-source gaming experience. Moreover, it supports most fan-made "WADs" from the idgames archive.
This app is derived from nvllsvm's GZDoom-Android port.
To play most custom wads:
1. Place them in Freedoom/config/wads
2. Choose your preferred wad by pressing "Addons," "WADS," and then picking a wad from the main screen
3. Press "OK" and select the main game resource file you would like to play (usually freedoom2.wad)
4. Press "Launch"
5. Start a "new game" as you usually would, but with custom levels instead of the game's first level
6. (Alternative) Certain levels replace other game maps instead of the initial one, so you may need to use custom start arguments like -warp 3 1 or a warp command to reach them.
If you have the complete game iwads, put them in Freedoom/config next to freedoom1.wad and freedoom2.wad.
For game mods, please put them in Freedoom/config/mods.
Please note that this project and its production team are not associated with Id Software or its parent companies, Bethesda, or any relevant publishing companies.
