Okey 101 is played with four players in multiple rounds. The objective of the game is to complete the game with as few points as possible. After all rounds, the player with the lowest score is the winner. Points are determined by the numbers on the remaining tiles in the hand (for example, a red 3 = three points, a black 11 = 11 points). The game can end when there are no tiles left to pick from the stack or when one player completes their hand. A game consists of a certain number of rounds (for example, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 rounds). Each round lasts until one player completes their hand.
After one player is designated as the dealer, the dealer deals 21 tiles to each player and takes 22 tiles for themselves. While the remaining tiles are turned upside down on the table, one tile is left face-up. This face-up tile determines the Joker ("OKEY" tile). The game is played counter-clockwise. The player who deals starts and discards one tile before drawing a tile. The turn then passes to the player on their right. Each player who follows may either draw a tile from the stack or pick up the last tile discarded by the previous player. After drawing a tile, if the total sum of a player's sets is 101, the player may open their hand (placing their sets on the table). Once a player opens their hand, they place their sets on the table, next to the other sets. If a player cannot put a tile on the table, they skip their turn by discarding a tile. The player who is next must always complete their turn by putting a tile on the table, even if they have opened their entire hand.
To open your hand, you must have at least 101 points. To open your hand, you must have three or four sets of the same numbered tiles of different colors (for example, black 5, red 5, and blue 5) or sequential sets of the same colored tiles (for example, red 7, 8, 9). There must be a minimum of three tiles in each set. To be able to add tiles to already opened sets, the player must first open their hand by reaching the minimum of 101 points. In the same game, you can both open your hand and add tiles to other opened sets. If a player picks up the tile discarded by the previous player, they must use it. If the player hasn't opened their hand yet, they must open their hand when they pick up the tile and use the newly picked tile as part of one of their sets. The picked tile cannot be left in the player's hand. If the tile cannot be used to create a set or be used to open your hand, then it is put back in the stack, and the player draws another tile. No penalty points are given for this mistake.
Another way to open your hand is to collect at least five pairs of tiles. A pair consists of two similar tiles. If a player opens their hand with a pair, they cannot open their hand with a regular set anymore in this game. However, they can add tiles to the sets on the table that were opened by other players. If all four players make a pair in the same game, the round is canceled, and a new game starts. No player receives penalty points in this game.
