Grid cells must be colored or left blank based on numbers on the side of the grid: the purpose is to reveal a hidden image. The numbers indicate how many consecutive cells must be filled in a row or a column. If the clue includes multiple numbers, there will surely be at least one space between a group of colored cells and the next. So being able to determine which cells will remain empty (marking them with an "X") is just as important as knowing which ones to color because it limits the placement possibilities of colored cells. Crossing the information of the rows with those of the columns optimizes the position of the cells to color.
