Chess is played on a chessboard, which is a square board divided into 64 squares (8×8) of alternate colors, similar to the board used in the game of drafts (checkers).



Whatever be the actual color, the lighter colored groups are called 'light' or 'white' and the darker colored ones are called 'dark' or 'black'. The 16 "white" and 16 "black" pieces are placed on the chessboard, at the beginning of the game. The chessboard is laid out in such a way that a white square lies in each player's right corner and a black square lies in the left corner. Each player has 16 pieces to his right.
