As the formation lap draws to a close, you gently apply pressure to the accelerator and steer from side to side, maintaining a high temperature on your wheels. You know that this is key to making a fast start around the first corner. With any luck, you may be able to overtake the two cars ahead of you. They have already taken up their starting positions. You ease up on the gas pedal and focus on the yellow line on your starting grid spot. By gently applying the brakes, you try to gain every millimetre allowed by the regulations and line up your front wing perfectly with the white line that defines your starting position. Now you are pushing the paddles on the bottom of the steering wheel to disengage the clutch and shift from second to first gear. The car comes to a standstill. As the first red light of the traffic light sequence turns on, you brace yourself. You've done this before, you know what to expect. You gently push the gas pedal with your right foot. The second red light comes on and the RPM hits the limiter. At the third red light, the engine roars loudly as you search for the right RPMs for the perfect start. The fourth red light comes on and the heat from the cars in front of you can be seen as distortion waves. All the other drivers are ready for the challenge ahead. As the fifth and final red light comes on, you take a quick glance at your steering wheel display. Everything looks good.
