The Polyglots apps are part of the Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) program, funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment and managed by Education Services Australia.
They are a series of engaging, play-based language learning apps that encourage children in the early years of schooling to explore another language and culture.
Schools choose to set the apps to one language from a choice of Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Hindi, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Modern Greek, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese.
App 9: The Polyglots Go Camping is the second of four new apps designed for primary school students in years 1–2. It is set in an Australian bush camping ground with the Polyglots and their families and provides opportunities for Year 1 students to learn family-related language. Students will learn the words for various family member names. They will explore the possessive phrase ‘Whose is it/this?’ and the appropriate response ‘It’s mine/family member’s’ when talking about the ownership of objects. A selection of contextualised incidental language is included and the language of numbers beyond ten is explored.
