The “Estonia” ferry sinks into the Baltic Sea, taking 850 people with it.

Despite complying with all safety regulations, the extremely low water temperature, coupled with the speed with which the ship sank, made it impossible for most of the passage to be saved.

The circumstances of the sinking remain a mystery. Some testimonies claim that the vehicle access gate opened for some reason, causing the ferry to flood rapidly. The gate had passed security checks without apparent failures.
