Explorística 2.0 is an initiative of Statistics Portugal, aiming to bring to the educational communities the fundamentals of statistics and probabilities (with a focus on sampling), conveying the concepts in a practical and experimental way.
Explorística 2.0 integrates several games, each one involving activities such as selecting, collecting, describing and estimating.
The Key – This game teaches how it is possible to calculate the area of a circle by making successive throws of small cubes in a square area in which a circle is inscribed. This simulation system – the "Estimatron"! – is based on the statistical method of Monte Carlo. Repeated launches with the Estimatron allow the player to check the proportion of the area of the circle in relation to the area of the square and thus find the key that opens a secret door.
