The game of Sungka is native to the Philippines.
Its history dates as far back as the 17th century. In 1692 Father José Sanchez, a Jesuit priest, called the game Kunggit in his dictionary of the Visayan (Cebuano) language. He wrote that the game was played with “seashells on a wooden, boat-like board”.
Sungka is a version of Mancala. "Some historians believe that mancala is the oldest game in the world based on the archaeological evidence found in Jordan that dates around 6000 BCE."
Other Names: 1) Chongka’ (Marianas), 2) Congkak (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore), 3) Dakon (Java), 4) Naranj (Maldives)
Traditionally, the game is played on an oblong-shaped block of wood called "sungka-an" with two rows of pits and two bigger pits at the ends. The bigger pit is called home. A standard game of Sungka has 7 pits on each row with each pit initially filled with 7 game pieces. The home pits are initially empty.
Sungka+ can be played on virtually any device that could launch a modern internet browser - laptops, desktops, mobile phones, and smart TVs. It can be added to the home screen on mobile devices and can be played offline.
From one culture to another, Sungka+ is a celebration of an authentic native Filipino game. It was created to keep the tradition alive and to offer features unseen in existing Sungka games on the internet:
1) Configurable number of pits and tokens. As a learning tool, kids can start with a few pits and tokens and increase the numbers as they become good with math and strategy.
2) Clockwise or counter-clockwise play. It is also possible for one player to play clockwise and the other counter-clockwise.
3) An option to hide the number of tokens when it is more than a certain number. With this, Sungka+ becomes a memory game.
4) Board can be rotated to switch player orientation.
5) Animation Control - variable speed and toggle to pause opponent's play.
Sungka+ with its easy-to-follow rules would appeal to the young and old alike. It is recommended as a learning tool as it strengthens the mind in aspects of math, strategy, and memory. Institutions have found Sungka to be effective in helping pupils with dyscalculia and in reducing cognitive decline for the elderly.
