◆◇◆ Boat Racing Lecture ◆◇◆

■ What is boat racing?
It is one of the four public competitions in Japan. (The other three are horse racing, keirin racing, and auto racing.)

■ Who is operating it?
It is operated by the local governments with boat racing courses based on the Motorboat Racing Law.

■ Where are the boat racing courses?
There are 24 courses throughout the country.
(Gunma, Saitama, Tokyo, Shizuoka, Aichi, Mie, Fukui, Shiga, Osaka, Hyogo, Tokushima, Kagawa, Okayama, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki)

■ Do other countries have it too?
Although unique to Japan, it has also been held in Misa-ri, Korea since 2002.

■ What kind of race?
It is a race that races 600m of the water surface three times counterclockwise with six boats: white, black, red, blue, yellow, and green.

■ What kind of races are there?
There are 5 grades of general, G3, G2, G1, and SG, the highest being SG. The higher the grade, the higher the prize money, and the winning prize money for the year-end prize money king decision event (Grand Prix) is one billion yen!

■ How does the race work?
A race (competition) is held for about six days with about 50 people. Qualifying is held on days 1 to 4, and the top 18 can participate in the semifinals on day 5. The first and second place finishers in the semifinals can participate in the finals on the sixth day.

■ How is the boat to ride and how is it decided?
Boats are composed of three parts: boats, motors, and propellers.
These are used with the equipment provided by the boat racing course, so a lottery is held the day before the race to ensure fairness.
Racers themselves adjust the propellers and engine and conduct test runs on the boat they have won in the lottery.

■ What about the unique start?
It is not a straight line start where everyone lines up at the starting line and yells "yoido n!" The flying start method is used where they must pass the starting line within a stipulated time. Being too fast disqualifies you as a "foul."
