The 29 Card Game is a popular trick-taking game, primarily played in South Asia, especially in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. It is played by 4 players in fixed partnerships (2 teams of 2). The game uses a standard 32-card deck (A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7 of each suit). Here are the basic rules:
Objective The goal is to score 29 points or more by winning tricks containing valuable cards. The team that reaches or exceeds 29 points first wins the game.
Setup Players: 4 players divided into 2 teams of 2. Partners sit opposite each other.
Deck: Use a 32-card deck (A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7 of each suit).
Dealing: Each player is dealt 8 cards (32 cards total). The dealer shuffles and deals the cards in batches of 4 or 2 at a time.
Card Rankings and Values Trump Suit: One suit is chosen as the trump suit, which outranks all other suits.
Card Rankings (from highest to lowest):
Trump Suit: J (highest), 9, A, K, Q, 10, 8, 7.
Non-Trump Suits: A (highest), K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7.
Card Values:
Jack of Trump (J) = 3 points
Nine of Trump (9) = 2 points
Ace of Trump (A) = 1 point
King of Trump (K) = 1 point
Queen of Trump (Q) = 1 point
Ten of Trump (10) = 1 point
Other cards = 0 points.
Gameplay Bidding:
Players bid to determine the trump suit and the target score for the round.
Bidding starts with the player to the left of the dealer and proceeds clockwise.
The minimum bid is 16, and the highest possible bid is 28.
The highest bidder chooses the trump suit and commits to scoring at least the bid amount.
Playing Tricks:
The player to the left of the dealer leads the first trick.
Players must follow the suit of the lead card if possible. If not, they can play any card, including a trump.
The highest card of the lead suit or the highest trump card wins the trick.
The winner of the trick leads the next trick.
Scoring:
After all 8 tricks are played, the bidding team counts the points from the cards they won.
If they meet or exceed their bid, they score the bid amount.
If they fail, they lose the bid amount.
The opposing team scores the points they won from their tricks.
Winning the Game The first team to reach or exceed 29 points wins the game.
If both teams reach 29 points in the same round, the bidding team wins.
Special Rules Trump Jack (J):
The Jack of the trump suit is the highest card and is worth 3 points.
Trump Nine (9):
The 9 of the trump suit is the second-highest card and is worth 2 points.
No Trump:
If a player bids 28, they declare "No Trump," meaning there is no trump suit. In this case, the card rankings follow A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7 for all suits.
