Gloom: Digital Edition allows players to play negative Modifier Cards on their own family members that will lower their Self-Worth points. These cards offer scenarios such as "Being attacked by manatees", "Deceived by salespeople" or "Cornered by rats." These shocking incidents increase your chances of winning. On the other hand, positive Modifier Cards played on your opponent's's family members will high their Self-Worth points. These events consist of "Thrilled by ducks", "Publicized in a party", or "Blessed by a church leader."

To add to the gameplay, Event Cards can be played as well, offering options to cancel turns, bring back characters from the dead, and other unique events. Finally, when your family members' negative points have reached your desired level, you can play an Untimely Death Card, leading them to an early grave. The game ends when an entire family has passed away, and the one with the most negative points wins - although that's may be a rather grim "victory.
