This started as a test project to explore making an evolution sim game.
I decided to start with a relatively simple and well-established evolutionish algorithm. It then turned into its own thing as an interactive GoL-driven art app.
This take on the GoL algorithm includes visualizations of the ‘pressure zones’ that the ‘units’ exert on the spaces around them. This started as a debugging method, but I like the increased color variety and decided to keep them.
In addition to the units and pressure zones, immutable ‘walls’ can be placed on the board. These stop the propagation of the units.

Watch the GoL automation unfold!
Pause the automation, step forward and backwards in time!
Add or erase units or walls!
Shake the device to create a random board!
Precision drawing with a faux-d-pad!
