Ranked number one in role-playing games on the AppStore in 32 different countries, "You Are Hope" is a unique game created by independent developer Jason Rohrer. While this mobile app is not directly affiliated with Rohrer, it offers players a standalone online world with custom features that do not exist in the original PC game.


One of the most significant aspects of this game is selecting names for your children who also serve as other players. Motherly love is evident as players give the name, "Hope," to their virtual children.


"Your destiny is to build an entire civilization together with generations of other players," says the game's developer. Each virtual minute translates to one game year with a lifespan of no more than 60 years. While a single life in the game is limited, the willingness to work hard and leave a lasting legacy for your descendants can help your family prosper through multiple generations.


At times, virtual players may find themselves starting alone in the wilderness. The first order of business is to build a fire to stay warm and learn how to hunt rabbits for food and for their fur to make clothes. Finding a perfect location to establish a settlement is essential as fellow players could soon arrive as your children and you will need to care for them until they become independent.


In contrast, some players may be born into wonderful sprawling cities with established farmers, cooks, blacksmiths, shepherds, and hunters. As a new player, you may inherit a farming job from an uncle, gather some friends to start a settlement, or even hunt dangerous animals. The possibilities are endless, but it's vital to think about how you want to leave your mark on the game before you leave it.


Every life in the game introduces players to new people with varying levels of experience. Some will teach you everything you need to know while others will learn from you. Unfortunately, some players may challenge the civilization you are building and disrupt your progress. Therefore, it's up to you and the other players to build the world and establish order for a brief moment in time before future generations take over.


Once your game life is over, you get the chance to review your family tree and observe how your descendants are doing. The more relatives that survive into adulthood, the greater your sense of pride knowing that you established your family line for generations to come. The 1.7.0 release provided the Family Ties IAP which includes observer mode and family chronicles. While not necessary, this optional add-on can further enhance the game's experience.
