Use a cue stick to strike billiard balls on a cloth-covered table. Play a variety of games of skill in cue sports.
Cue sports, also referred to as billiard sports, encompass a diverse range of skill-based games typically played using a stick known as a cue. The cue is utilized to hit billiard balls and maneuver them across a billiards table that is draped in cloth and surrounded by rubber cushions.
These types of games are often played in specialized establishments, such as pool halls or even in people’s homes. Players, ranging from amateurs to professionals, must utilize precision and strategy to outmaneuver their opponents, sinking balls into pockets placed around the table.
There are several variations of cue sports, each with its own unique set of rules. For example, eight-ball billiards is a popular variation that involves the use of 16 balls - 7 stripes, 7 solids, a black ball (number 8) and a cue ball. Players must aim to pot all of their designated balls before sinking the eight-ball to win the game.
Another variation is snooker, a game that’s favored by British players. It consists of 21 balls in total, 15 of which are red and marked with one point each, while six are different colors and have varying point values. The aim is to first pocket a red ball, followed by a colored one, and so on. Points are tallied for each successful pot, with the player with the most points at the end of the game being declared the winner.
No matter the variation, cue sports require a great deal of skill, patience, and concentration. It’s not enough to simply hit the ball - players must be able to control the ball’s trajectory and spin, as well as anticipate their opponents’ moves. With so much mental and physical dexterity involved, it’s no wonder cue sports continue to be enjoyed by players of all ages and levels of experience.
